I started at your window, peering past the murky panes
Then moved on down to the meeting place of the crew of the crane
I paused briefly on your doorstep to see if you might pass
Jumped up to see across the fence into your garden's grass
I pondered your driveway before relenting to routine
Strolling rescued walkways where we sometimes find lost dreams
I found myself at the swing set, soon flying through the air
Yet seasickness caught me much too quick because you were not there
I tried to get to the marketplace, hoping that you'd appear
But, alas, my luck had failed me still, 'cause you were nowhere near
I've been stumbling through three-minute dreams, not knowing where to turn
Caught between times and the changing face of lessons I've yet to learn
I didn't give up on finding you, but took a rest all the same
Figures I'd regret that, resting clearly isn't this heart's aim
I ended up with Captain at longevity base for a few
Clouds were playing shape-shifter against that calm clear blue
I thought that I'd discover where you'd hidden yourself this time
Bagging at the grocery store or off committing some strange crime?
Let me ask one tiny thing, just who are you today?
Where do you disappear to when you go off your own way?
I guessed a lot of things today all because you were not there
Understood the things I never could when you were proving life ain't fair
I learned a lot from you today because you were not there
From you, I've learned to say goodbye; how to pretend not to care.

I am afraid that once I get to Heaven, God will sneeze and I won't know what to say.
God made men first. Then he had a better idea!
